Summary
The ACLU is a civil liberties organization dedicated to defending and preserving individual rights and liberties. The Summer Legal Intern will support the LGBTQ & HIV Project through legal and factual research, drafting, litigation support, legislative advocacy, and public education work.
Responsibilities
- Conducting legal and fact research and drafting research memos for current and prospective litigation
- Potentially drafting litigation documents such as discovery requests, affidavits and motions
- Researching and drafting materials for legislative advocacy and/or public education
Skills
- Qualifying applicants must currently be matriculated legal students
- The internship is open to current law students who will have completed at least one year of law school by the start of the internship
- Demonstrated commitment to the advancement and protection of the civil liberties of LGBTQ+ people and people living with HIV
- Excellent research skills, including conducting internet and legal database research
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and writing
- Attention to detail, excellent organizing and time-management skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
- The initiative to see projects through to completion

Benefits
- A stipend is available for those students who are lawfully authorized to work.
- Students who receive outside funding are eligible for a partial stipend to bring their total funding up to the level of the ACLU’s stipend amount for the summer.
- This internship can be remote or hybrid based in our New York office.
