Summary
The American Heart Association is a voluntary health organization dedicated to improving cardiovascular and brain health. The part-time Epidemiology Intern will support the Annual Heart Disease and Stroke Statistical Update by analyzing national surveillance and healthcare datasets, producing statistical reports, and developing procedures for reproducible public health research.
Responsibilities
- Extracting, analyzing and summarizing prevalence, mortality, and health care utilization, expenditure and outcome data using national data sets (i.e., NHANES, NHIS, CDC WONDER, HCUP, MEPS, etc.)
- Assisting with the collection, management, analysis, and reporting of cardiovascular disease and stroke-related data
- Creating and updating statistical tables, figures, charts, and supporting documentation for scientific reports and publications
- Developing and maintaining standard operating procedures (SOPs), analytic documentation, and process guides for data extraction, analysis, reporting, and quality assurance activities
- Collaborating with epidemiologists, data scientists, and scientific volunteers to respond to data requests and support annual publication activities
Skills
- Currently pursuing a Master's degree in Epidemiology, Public Health, Statistics, or a related field
- Working knowledge of statistical software such as cloud-based SAS and/or R required
- Interest in and commitment to working with chronic disease data and populations; this role focuses on chronic disease initiatives and is not centered on infectious disease research or programs
- Ability to conduct quantitative analyses, interpret public health data, develop written procedures and documentation, and work effectively with multidisciplinary teams to support high-quality, reproducible research and reporting efforts
- Coursework or experience in epidemiologic methods, statistics, and population health research
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy and quality assurance
- Effective oral, written and presentation communication skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment managing multiple priorities involving multiple entities
- Intermediate to excellent proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future
- Experience using approved enterprise or closed-system AI tools to support data analysis, documentation, quality assurance, or scientific reporting is preferred
