Job description

AST SpaceMobile is building the first and only global cellular broadband network in space to operate directly with standard, unmodified mobile devices based on our extensive IP and patent portfolio and designed for both commercial and government applications. Our engineers and space scientists are on a mission to eliminate the connectivity gaps faced by today’s five billion mobile subscribers and finally bring broadband to the billions who remain unconnected.

Position Overview

The Microns Process Optimization Intern will support manufacturing efficiency and throughput improvements across the Microns production line, with primary assignment to the Skins manufacturing process (solar and RF skins). This role focuses on analyzing end-to-end production flow, identifying bottlenecks and process starvation, and implementing data-driven improvements to increase output and reduce downtime.

The intern will collect and analyze production metrics, evaluate cycle times, and collaborate with manufacturing, quality, and engineering teams to streamline operations. The primary objective is to improve productivity, targeting a minimum 20% increase in throughput while maintaining safety, quality, and schedule performance.

This position provides hands-on exposure to aerospace hardware manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives in a fast-paced production environment.

This is an internship opportunity, and you must be enrolled in the following semester. For recent grads, please apply directly to our full time positions. Please also be available for the following dates: 6/1/2026 to 8/21/2026

Key Responsibilities

  • Map and document the full Skins manufacturing process, including solar and RF skin builds
  • Identify bottlenecks, constraints, and process starvation points that limit throughput
  • Collect and analyze production data including cycle times, takt time, WIP, downtime, and yield
  • Develop and implement process improvements to reduce waste and increase line efficiency
  • Support line balancing, workstation optimization, and standard work development
  • Recommend tooling, workflow, or layout changes to improve productivity and ergonomics
  • Collaborate with technicians and engineers to validate and deploy improvements on the floor
  • Monitor performance metrics and quantify gains from implemented changes
  • Document process flows, findings, and improvement plans

Qualifications

Education

  • Enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical discipline

Experience

  • Coursework or project experience related to manufacturing processes, operations, or production systems
  • Experience collecting and analyzing data using Excel or similar tools
  • Familiarity with basic process improvement or lean manufacturing concepts

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Lean, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement methodologies
  • Exposure to time studies, value stream mapping, or capacity planning
  • Experience in a lab, shop, or manufacturing environment
  • Basic understanding of aerospace or electronics assembly processes
  • Experience with data visualization or reporting tools

Soft Skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset
  • Attention to detail and process discipline
  • Ability to work hands-on in a production environment
  • Effective communication with technicians and cross-functional teams
  • Self-starter with a focus on measurable results

Technology Stack

  • Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets
  • Basic statistical or data analysis tools
  • Manufacturing documentation systems (MES/ERP exposure is a plus)
  • Standard engineering productivity tools

Physical Requirements

  • Regular presence on the manufacturing floor
  • Standing and walking for extended periods
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs occasionally
  • Use of PPE as required in production areas
