Job description

Job Summary

The Marketing & Graphic Design Intern for Alumni Affairs supports creative marketing and engagement initiatives designed to connect Lamar University with its alumni community. This internship provides hands-on experience creating visual content for social media, email, websites, print materials, events and other marketing projects while gaining insight into how design is used in a professional higher education environment.

The ideal candidate is a creative, motivated and detail-oriented student who enjoys bringing ideas to life through design and is eager to develop their skills, build their portfolio and gain real-world experience working with a professional marketing team.

Through this internship, students will gain experience in:

  • Graphic design and visual storytelling
  • Creating marketing materials for digital and print platforms
  • Social media graphics and digital content
  • Branding and maintaining visual consistency
  • Canva and Adobe InDesign and Photoshop
  • Marketing and audience engagement
  • Event marketing and promotional materials
  • Working with feedback and revising creative projects
  • Managing multiple creative projects and deadlines

What This Internship Offers:

This is an opportunity to do more than create assignments for a class—students will create work for a real audience. Designs produced through the internship may be used to promote Lamar University alumni programs, events and initiatives across digital and print platforms.

Essential Job Functions

  • Creating original graphics and marketing materials for Lamar University Alumni Affairs
  • Designing content for social media, email communications, websites, print publications and promotional materials for Lamar University alumni
  • Assisting with the development of creative concepts and campaigns that engage Lamar University alumni
  • Creating graphics and promotional materials for alumni events, programs and special initiatives
  • Helping develop visual content that tells the stories of Lamar University alumni
  • Utilizing Canva and Adobe InDesign and Photoshop to create and edit professional-quality designs
  • Ensuring designs follow established university branding and visual standards
  • Receiving feedback and making revisions to strengthen the effectiveness and quality of designs
  • Assisting with photography/videography, content collection or other creative projects as needed
  • Supporting event preparation and providing creative or marketing assistance at events
  • Building experience with the creative process from concept development through final product
  • Maintaining organized digital files and design assets
  • Being willing to learn new tools, techniques and design practices
  • Maintaining a professional, positive and organized work environment
  • Assisting with campus errands, mailings and other departmental needs as necessary
  • Completing other duties as assigned in support of Alumni Affairs operations

Minimum and Desired Qualifications

  • Must be full-time Lamar University student
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA
  • Must be an undergraduate student
  • Communicate effectively
  • Must have excellent writing skills (grammar, mechanics/organization, development, style, etc.)
  • Have strong critical reading skills
  • Be punctual and organized
  • Be malleable and willing to receive feedback
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to follow directions
  • Must be able to work efficiently and accurately
  • Must be dependable
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Have a professional manner
  • Strong communication skills
  • Be able to work independently and with minimal supervision

Supplemental Information

  • This position is primarily sedentary but may require walking across campus for deliveries, errands, or event support. Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds occasionally.
  • Minimum 15 hours per week.
  • Maximum 19.5 hours per week.
  • Office hours are Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., with occasional evening and weekend events.
  • Flexible scheduling available around class schedules.
  • This position is not a remote position. Candidate must be available to work on campus in the Alumni Office.
