Job description
Summary
Reddit is a community-driven online platform built around shared interests, conversations, and user-generated content. The Software Engineer will design, develop, and operate backend systems and APIs for advertising products, build scalable services, support operational stability, and lead cross-functional delivery, experimentation, and ad performance initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with product managers to design and implement Ads products
- Work closely with the platform and data teams while building new features
- Lead the processes needed to improve operational stability, including improving code quality, delivering dashboards and data visualizations
- Build extensible components that align with the product objectives
- Support day-to-day project management tasks, including communicating project updates, managing project timelines, and overseeing project execution
- Design, develop, and operate backend microservices and APIs that power ads, including resolution, validation, and transformation across the advertising data models
- Build and maintain distributed, horizontally scalable backend systems that serve high-volume production traffic, including data storage, caching, and instrumentation for observability and reliability
- Design and execute A/B experiments and feature rollouts to evaluate product changes, and partner with data science teams to measure ad performance and inform product decisions
Skills
- Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering (any field) or related quantitative discipline
- Four (4) years of experience in the job offered or related occupation
- Backend services design and development in Java, Go or Python
- Distributed, horizontally scalable backend system design for high-traffic production workloads (e.g., real-time ad serving)
- Service-to-service API design using RPC or HTTP-based frameworks (e.g., gRPC, Thrift, GQL)
- Deployment and operation of production services on Amazon Web Services (AWS), including container orchestration platforms (e.g., Amazon ECS or Kubernetes)
- Data modeling and schema design for relational and NoSQL datastores (e.g., MySQL, Amazon DynamoDB), including query optimization and indexing
- A/B testing and feature-flagged experimentation in production environments
- Production observability instrumentation, including metrics, logs, and request tracing (e.g., Amazon CloudWatch, AWS X-Ray), for incident diagnosis and resolution
- Automated unit, integration, and functional testing integrated into continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines
- Backend system development in digital advertising technology, including ad ingestion, ad serving, or ad-targeting workflows
- Technical design and end-to-end delivery leadership of multi-quarter projects, including authoring technical design documents and driving cross-functional execution with product, data, and platform partners
