Job description

Summary

Taxwell is a digital tax filing platform providing professional and do-it-yourself tax preparation products. The Software Engineer II will support and enhance backend applications, services, integrations, authentication, databases, and infrastructure across modern and legacy systems, while using AI-assisted development tools and collaborating with technical and non-technical teams.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and enhance primarily backend applications and services using C#/.NET and SQL Server
  • Troubleshoot production issues across application code, databases, authentication, configuration, logging, integrations, and deployment environments
  • Work with both modern and legacy .NET systems and make safe, focused improvements to existing applications
  • Contribute to the incremental modernization of legacy systems, including authentication, deployment, observability, and operational improvements
  • Work across services, databases, integrations, and support-facing applications when problems cross system boundaries
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, troubleshooting guides, and investigation notes
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Product, IT, Help Desk, Customer Success, and other teams to resolve technical issues
  • Use AI-assisted engineering tools for development, code analysis, testing, debugging, and documentation, while critically evaluating AI-generated output before it is used in production

Skills

  • Strong hands-on experience with C# and .NET application development
  • Strong SQL Server skills, including stored procedures and data-driven troubleshooting
  • Experience developing and troubleshooting backend applications, services, and integrations
  • Ability to understand unfamiliar or legacy code and make safe, focused changes
  • Experience diagnosing production issues using application logs, database analysis, and other operational data
  • AI development tools such as Claude Code, or Cursor
  • Familiarity with authentication and authorization concepts such as OIDC, claims, roles, sessions, or platforms such as Okta
  • Experience with source control, CI/CD pipelines, testing, and software deployment practices
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools or a strong willingness to incorporate them into day-to-day engineering workflows
  • Ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical partners
  • Experience with VB.NET, IIS, Windows services, Vue/TypeScript, & AWS services

Qualifications

Must Haves
