Job description

Summary

Xcellent Technology Solutions (XTS) is seeking an Applications Engineer to support the United States Geological Survey (USGS) National Geospatial Technical Operations Center. The role focuses on enhancing and maintaining public-facing applications for The National Map, working with JavaScript and AWS technologies to improve cloud-based data workflows, troubleshoot issues, and develop efficient, scalable solutions.

Responsibilities

  • You’ll help enhance and maintain the public-facing applications that bring authoritative geographic information to users through The National Map
  • You’ll step into existing applications, learn how they work, and help make them better—whether that means improving functionality, enhancing how data is presented, troubleshooting an issue, or finding a more efficient way for information to move through the environment
  • You’ll work with AWS technologies to support and automate cloud-based data workflows, test and improve existing solutions, and think through how code can become more efficient and scalable as needs evolve
  • You’ll collaborate within a technical environment where solving the problem well matters just as much as getting the code to work
  • Being able to understand someone else’s code, troubleshoot it, and improve it will be important
  • To support and automate cloud-based data processing workflows and help those workflows operate efficiently as needs grow
  • To think beyond simply getting something to work and consider how it will perform and be maintained
  • Solve a technical problem, work through what is happening, and develop a practical solution

Skills

  • Must have the ability to receive / maintain a favorable adjudicated Public Trust investigation (US Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident for at least 3 years)
  • You've achieved an accomplishment of a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or related field + 2 years of relevant experience in software or applications engineering
  • You've gained proficiency in JavaScript and an understanding of what makes code clean, efficient, and maintainable as much of this work involves existing applications, being able to understand someone else's code, troubleshoot it, and improve it will be important
  • You have hands-on experience with the AWS SDK and AWS CLI, along with familiarity with services such as Lambda, S3, and EC2 to support and automate cloud-based data processing workflows and help those workflows operate efficiently as needs grow
  • You have a solid understanding of software engineering fundaments, including version control, debugging, testing, algorithms, and data structures to think beyond simply getting something to work and consider how it will perform and be maintained
  • You have strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to solve a technical problem, work through what is happening, and develop a practical solution
  • Python experience
  • Experience with HTML, CSS, React, Angular, or other modern front-end technologies
  • Back-end development experience using Node.js or similar technologies
  • Familiar with RESTful API design and integration
  • Additional experience working within AWS, Azure, or other cloud environments
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Server, or related Esri technologies
