Job description

PLEASE NOTE: The City is recruiting for one (1) position that may be filled as an Engineering Technician I, Engineering Technician II, or Intern Engineer (FE) depending on the qualifications, education, experience, and skill level of the selected candidate. Applicants will be considered for the position level for which they are best qualified.Job Purpose and Objectives: Assists the City Engineer and other Engineering staff of the City Of Emporia by performing a variety of intern level functions. This is a learning position and the expectation is to contribute significantly to the success of the organization. Job Competencies: Essential Functions include the following. Duties and responsibilities, as required by business necessity may be added, deleted, or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing. Schedule and shift assignments and work location may be changed at any time, as required by business necessity.

  1. Confer, coordinate, plan and provide support for the City Engineer, Engineering staff and department heads on various operational and administrative functions
  2. Assists Engineering staff with field inspections, investigations, record keeping, mapping, calculations or other work as assigned
  3. Observe currently active infrastructure construction projects
  4. Performs intern level engineering support under the direction of the City Engineer or other Engineering staff
  5. Assists with engineering projects, investigations and calculations and preparation of engineering documents as intern for an assigned area of responsibility
  6. Aids Engineering staff as needed to coordinate gathering of data and compilation of information necessary to complete project assignments
  7. Attends meetings as requested to address engineering issues related to assigned area of responsibility
  8. Observe, read and record a variety of information from sources such as plans and specifications, other construction documents, technical manuals, field inspections and testing information
  9. Utilizes a variety of computer software applications such as spreadsheet, database, computer-aided design (CAD), Arcview, word processing, and internet programs
  10. Travels to a variety of project sites for assigned area of responsibility
  11. Attends training for professional development purposes
  12. Assists in investigating complaints and requests for service regarding related area of responsibility
  13. Enforces and maintains compliance with all federal, state and local laws and ordinances
  14. Performs other duties as assigned or deemed necessary
  15. Complies with all organizational and departmental policies and procedures
  16. Operates all job-related equipment, machinery, tools and other aids as required or needed
  17. Protects and maintains any confidential information you have access to, whether oral, written, or electronic

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.Position Requirements:1.High school diploma or other equivalent2.Enrollment in or graduation from an accredited university Engineering program3.Passage of the Fundamentals of Engineering ExaminationCertifications / Licenses:1.Valid KS Driver’s License2.Kansas State Inspectors certification preferredSkills/Knowledge/Abilities:1.Some knowledge at an intern level of the principles, procedures, standards and practices related to engineering work with specialized knowledge in assigned area of responsibility 2.Computerized software programs used in engineering applications3.Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work4.Ability to fulfill all duties with minimal supervision and to work independently5.Assess situations rapidly and make logical decisions in a timely manner6.Analyze facts and exercise sound judgment7.Ability to effectively manage projects and multiple priorities simultaneously8.Strong written and verbal communication skills9.Problem solving and critical thinking skills10.Strong math, spelling, computer, and calculator abilities11.Ability to communicate in a professional, calm and courteous manner with the general public and employees12.Attention to detail
