As an Entry-Level Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Programming and Database Analyst based in our Oakland, Walnut Creek or Davis, California, office, you will work with a multi-disciplinary team providing GIS visualization, database, and data management services support to our Environmental Sciences and Engineering practice with site investigation, groundwater remediation, water resource management, surface water, and landfill projects.  The position requires the development and management of GIS data, geospatial databases, and standardized workflows to support projects and develop technical tools for a variety of technical environmental practices. The candidate may also have other duties supporting remediation and engineering projects such as GPS operation in the field related to field investigations, technical report QA/QC, and various data management duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Is this the right position to help you achieve your professional goals?  Some of the key responsibilities for the position include:

  • Support legacy workflows involving data management, data analysis, data visualization, report generation, and figure preparation;
  • Produce routine data visualization outputs in Excel, ArcGIS, and/or other data visualization platforms using relational querying in ArcGIS, Microsoft Access, and/or database scripts (Python, VBA, etc.);
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of environmental relational databases applications to compile, verify, analyze, and report large and diverse datasets;
  • Develop tools and procedures to improve the efficiency, accuracy, and transferability of data-intensive work products, such as programming automated processes for data evaluation within GIS and database applications;
  • Support our field teams by preparing mobile field forms and maps and managing a GPS unit for field data collection;
  • Develop tools for spatial data analysis and visualization using web maps and applications; and
  • Create, organize, manipulate, and generate GIS data for reporting, analysis, presentations, and data visualization purposes.

  • Training: This position requires health and safety, first aid, CPR, and other training, as well as medical monitoring, paid for by the firm.   • Fieldwork: Up to 25%
  • Overnight travel: Up to 10%

EDUCATION AND LICENSURE

  • Bachelor’s in a relevant technical discipline (GIS, computer/data science, geography, and/or environmental studies) requiring familiarity and skill with GIS and its associated software, analysis, reporting, cartography, data management, and visualization (required)
  • Master’s degree in a related discipline. (preferred)
  • GIS Certificate or GISP License a plus.

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proficiency in ESRI ArcGIS Desktop 10.x and ArcGIS Pro and experience with geodatabase structures and geoprocessing concepts. (required)
  • Demonstrated classroom or work experience with relational database applications using desktop (Microsoft Access), enterprise (Microsoft SQL Server), open source (PostgreSQL Server), and/or EQuIS database software and experience with writing query language (SQL). (required)
  • Practical or academic experience with writing and editing scripts using Python (Jupyter, ArcPy, ArcGIS Notebooks) for data analysis, geoprocessing tools, and automation. (required)
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, including the ability to write formulas and visualize data effectively. (required)
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills; understanding of data quality control concepts. (required)
  • Demonstrated general technical / analytical skills, including the ability to learn new software quickly. (required)
  • Strong time management skills with schedule flexibility to accommodate varied project deadlines and deliverables. (required)
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record for business travel. (required)
  • Additional practical or academic knowledge or experience with the following is a plus:
    • ArcGIS tools, apps, or extensions (Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, Survey123, Collector, Field Maps, ArcScene, Model Builder).
    • Other programming languages (ArcGIS Arcade expressions, JavaScript, VBA, R, Matlab).
    • GPS devices such as Trimble
    • Web mapping, including ArcGIS Online and/or Geocortex
    • Graphical design tools such as Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop
    • Workflow documentations, including writing workflows
    • Working with environmental data and knowledge of basic statistics
