Our People Are Our Power. MP Systems builds, maintains, and upgrades the electrical infrastructure that communities, businesses, and utilities depend on, including transmission, substations, overhead and underground distribution, and other critical infrastructure projects.
As a Project Management Intern, you will get hands-on experience supporting real utility construction projects from estimating and planning through field execution, project controls, and closeout. You will work with Project Managers, field leaders, Estimating, Safety, project support teams, and other partners to learn how projects are planned, built, tracked, and completed safely and successfully.
This internship is built for students who want meaningful work, exposure to the field, and a better understanding of the business side of construction. You will be encouraged to ask questions, take initiative, and contribute to the team while learning under the guidance of experienced professionals.
What You Will Do
Safety and Field Experience
- Complete safety orientation, follow jobsite requirements, and learn how crews work safely around electrical infrastructure, heavy equipment, and active construction sites.
- Visit jobsites with supervision and take part in safety observations, pre-planning conversations, and hazard-recognition activities.
- See how safety, quality, schedule, productivity, and cost shape day-to-day project decisions, and share observations with the right project or safety leader.
Project Coordination and Documentation
- Help organize drawings, specifications, contracts, submittals, RFIs, meeting notes, schedules, and other project records.
- Support project startup, estimating handoffs, document control, reporting, and routine updates.
- Track action items, deadlines, material and equipment needs, permits, inspections, site access, and other project details so the team has accurate information.
Preconstruction and Planning
- Assist with basic quantity takeoffs, scope reviews, bid documents, and plan/spec comparisons.
- Learn how projects are estimated, planned, scheduled, and handed off to operations.
- Gain exposure to transmission, distribution, substation, and other infrastructure construction methods through planning meetings and field-prep activities.
Scheduling, Resources, and Project Controls
- Attend project meetings, capture key decisions and follow-up items, and update approved trackers or schedules with direction from the Project Manager.
- Help coordinate materials, tools, equipment, vendors, and information needed by field crews.
- Support material tracking, purchase-order documentation, quotes, delivery coordination, cost coding, expense tracking, billing support, and change-order logs while learning the basics of budgets, productivity, forecasting, cash flow, and profitability.
- Complete assigned tasks under supervision; interns do not independently approve purchases, contracts, change orders, or financial transactions.
Communication, Teamwork, and Closeout
- Communicate professionally with Project Managers, field leaders, craft employees, customers, vendors, and internal partners.
- Prepare meeting notes, status updates, reports, and project correspondence for review while asking questions, seeking feedback, and following through on commitments.
- Support punch-list tracking, as-built documentation, warranty information, final billing support, closeout packages, and lessons-learned discussions.
- Complete an internship capstone or defined project assignment that shows what you learned and adds value to the business.
What You Will Learn
Through project assignments, mentorship, meetings, and jobsite exposure, you will build a practical understanding of:
- The full lifecycle of a utility construction project, from estimate to closeout.
- How Project Management, Estimating, Safety, field leadership, and project support teams work together.
- Construction planning, scheduling, resource coordination, and field execution.
- Utility construction methods and safe work practices.
- How project budgets, cost tracking, labor productivity, billing, forecasting, and profitability are managed.
- Professional communication, accountability, and collaboration between office and field teams.
