Managing Editor

Summary

Our National Conversation (ONC) seeks to reduce partisanship and promote effective solutions through media, educational materials, and dialogue. The Managing Editor directs writers and editors, manages the publication calendar and story pipeline, coordinates editorial operations, and trains contributors while safeguarding the organization’s nonpartisan positioning and branding.

Responsibilities

• Own the publication calendar and the story pipeline across written formats
• Set deadlines and follow up when interns slip up
• Manage and revise “How-To” documents to teach new interns quickly about existing processes for publishing content at ONC
• Chair standing editorial meetings weekly
• Attend Leadership meetings and All-Staff meetings to provide updates
• Help HR recruit, interview, and onboard new contributors
• Train new editors and writers and set the standards on sourcing, process, and format
• Safeguard ONC's nonpartisan positioning and branding
• Coordinate with other teams, such as Media & Marketing, for opportunities to do joint projects

Skills

• Writing or editing experience in any setting: professional, academic, student publication, or news organization
• Ability to edit for argument and structure, in addition to grammar and style
• Experience coordinating a group toward a deadline
• Comfort giving direction and holding people to their commitments
• Sound judgment about sourcing, attribution, and factual accuracy
• Demonstrated follow-through on sustained commitments
