Job description

Summary

The United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee is seeking a Paralegal, Intellectual Property to support the protection of its Olympic, Paralympic, and other intellectual property rights. The role investigates infringement matters, manages trademark and copyright filings, supports IP agreements and litigation, and conducts related legal research.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate intellectual property infringement matters and draft letters and other correspondence to trademark/copyright infringers. Track efforts through database management
  • Look for specimens for trademark filings
  • Draft responses to requests to use USOPC marks
  • Study and conduct research of history and existing agreements for provisions related to IP inquiries or disputes
  • Assist in managing U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and U.S. Copyright Office filings and maintaining internal files
  • Organize and maintain all IP matter files and ensure compliance with the USOPC’s document retention policy
  • Support anti-ambush efforts during the Olympic & Paralympic Games
  • Conduct IP research projects as needed
  • Assist marketing & IP attorneys in reviewing, research, revising, and finalizing IP agreements. Attend negotiation meetings, take detailed notes and prepare contract drafts at counsel’s direction in compliance with USOPC standards
  • Assist with matters relating to IP litigation, including legal research, document production, writing memoranda, and maintaining a status log of ongoing cases
  • Perform other duties in the areas of marketing & IP as assigned

Skills

  • High school diploma
  • Paralegal certification
  • 3+ years of legal experience in intellectual property law with a focus on trademark practice, including supporting a significant trademark portfolio, preferably in a large firm and/or corporate environment
  • Robust knowledge of trademark and copyright laws and licensing issues
  • Appreciation and sensitivity toward public relations issues
  • Working knowledge of social media and internet platforms
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and organization skills
  • Strong customer service mindset
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Creative and collaborative problem-solving ability
  • Ability to work with direction from multiple sources
  • Ability to be flexible in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to maintain absolute confidentiality, to perform duties with utmost discretion, and to act with complete integrity
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to interact with professional maturity with all constituents
  • Excellent Word, PowerPoint, and Excel processing and database management
  • Domestic travel as necessary
  • Regular attendance at work is an essential job function
  • Associate's Degree preferred
  • Experience with amateur or professional sports organizations beneficial but not required
