At Food Access LA, our interns play an active role in building a more equitable food system across Los Angeles. Through our internship program, you’ll work alongside our team, gain real-world nonprofit experience, develop valuable professional skills, and contribute to programs that connect communities with fresh, healthy food and support local farmers and small businesses. Whether you’re interested in community engagement, food access, communications, nonprofit management, or program development, there are opportunities to learn, grow, and make a difference.
Interns will learn about nutrition education, data analysis, recipe demonstration, and more. Internship SummaryThe intern will gain competencies and experience in community nutrition education throughFood Access LA’s Pompea Smith Good Cooking/Buena Cocina Nutrition Education Program(PSGC). The PSGC program provides evidence-based nutrition education with healthy,culturally appropriate, low-cost food demonstrations utilizing local California-grown produce.The internship is set up as a hybrid experience as time will be required at Food Access LA’smain office and/or classes at partner schools, Food AccessLA’s farmers market, and othercommunity sites across Los Angeles (LA) County with an estimated 3 days on-site per weekand a month of advanced scheduling. Much of our programming is conducted in South LosAngeles (SPA ).The ideal intern is passionate about the promotion of local California farmers and highquality nutrition education to diverse communities located throughout LA County, capable oftaking initiative and working independently, thrives on a structured and fast-paced timeline,enjoys working with a variety of stakeholders, and gains fulfillment in a multifaceted rolethat requires a unique blend of creative and analytic skills.Intern Competencies**May vary and can be adaptable to the intern's program needs• Become fully versed in the Pompea Smith Good Cooking/Buena Cocina NutritionEducation Program’s objectives, activities, and expected outcomes• Develop lesson plans, to include lesson activities, handouts, and recipe demonstration• Deliver lesson plan to an audience (participants, health educators, and/or staff)• Conduct a community nutrition education project utilizing public health and/orbehavior change theory and experiential evidence, to include: Community assessment/needs assessment Program development Project execution with data collection Data analysis Summary or program recommendations or final report• Develop culturally competent nutrition education materials for sharing with diverseaudiences and platforms• Participate in nutrition team meetings and trainings• Participate in meetings with external partners• Conduct qualitative interviews with program participants

Internships are based on student’s availability and school schedule. Our interns generally serve between 9-12 hours per week. While these time frames work best for most students, all scheduling, including start/end dates and hours per week, are flexible and negotiated between the candidate and the supervisor during the interview stage of the selection process. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
We’re looking for interns who are reliable, flexible, detail-oriented, and self-motivated. Strong written and verbal communication, organization, and project management skills are also valued.
