OIEC is the state agency that helps injured employees with their Texas workers' compensation claims. The agency assists, educates, and advocates on their behalf. OIEC provides services in 20 offices across the state. Agency services include advocacy, customer service, and dispute assistance through OIEC's Ombudsman Program.

Job Description

Law Clerk Intern - Austin, part-time, paid, temporary

Develop your legal skills with a team of professionals at the Office of Injured Employee Counsel (OIEC). OIEC plays a vital role in supporting injured employees across Texas, ensuring fair treatment and access to benefits within the workers' compensation system.

OIEC is seeking a law clerk to assist the agency with a variety of legal and policy matters. In this role, you will conduct legal research, summarize and analyze legislation, and review and assess relevant case law. You will also support the general counsel in areas such as administrative law, litigation support, rulemaking, employment matters, contracts, and open records.

This position offers the opportunity to contribute directly to policies and guidance that impact injured employees throughout the state. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong legal research and writing skills. They should be able to draft clear, well-reasoned legal documents in plain language and exercise sound judgment when assessing legal risks. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, an effective communicator, collaborative, and eager to take on new subjects and challenges.

Unique to this job:

  • Temporary, part-time, 20 hours/week, flexible hours

  • In Austin, in office

  • Three months from hire date (possibly beyond)

  • Paid once a month on the first working day of the month

Travel Required: 5%

Essential Job Duties

This position:

  • Conducts legal research.

  • Reviews and analyzes legal documents, records, and motions.

  • May assist in drafting bills and amendments, and related materials for legislative consideration.

  • Researches and interprets state statutes, agency regulations, and federal laws.

  • Draft responses to public information requests.

  • Provides general legal support such as scanning, redacting confidential information for document production, and reviewing and editing documents.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

This position requires:

  • Enrolled in an accredited law school or graduation from an accredited law school with a JD or LL.B.

  • Completion of a minimum of two semesters of law school. (Transcripts required with application).

  • Six (6) months of legal experience.

  • Regular work attendance.

Additional law school coursework beyond the required two semesters may be used to substitute for the six months of legal experience.

Additionally, preferences for this job are:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of administrative or litigation law.

  • Experience researching and drafting legal documents.

Candidate must reside in Texas or be able to relocate to Texas by the start date.

Additional Information

Former Foster Youth Preference

An individual who was under the permanent managing conservatorship of the Department of Family and Protective Services on the day preceding the individual's 18th birthday is entitled to a preference in employment with a state agency over other applicants for the same position who do not have a greater qualification.
