Job description

Summary

Symetra is a national financial services company dedicated to helping people achieve their financial goals and feel confident about the future. The Financial Reporting Analyst will support investment accounting, financial close, regulatory reporting, data governance, reconciliations, internal controls, and process improvement across a diverse investment portfolio.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting close processes, including preparation of journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and supporting analyses
  • Research, document, and resolve accounting issues related to a diverse investment portfolio, including fixed income securities, equities, mortgage loans, derivatives, alternative investments, and tax credit structures
  • Support GAAP and Statutory financial reporting processes, including preparation of disclosures, schedules, variance analyses, and management reporting deliverables
  • Maintain strong internal controls and support internal and external audit requests, regulatory examinations, and accounting policy compliance initiatives
  • Serve as a steward of investment accounting data by monitoring data quality, performing reconciliations and validation activities, and ensuring the accuracy and completeness of information used in financial reporting and decision-making
  • Partner with Accounting, Investments, Finance, Technology, and external service providers to resolve accounting, operational, and data-related issues and improve end-to-end processes
  • Identify opportunities for automation, standardization, and process improvement, helping enhance the efficiency, scalability, and control environment of the investment accounting function
  • Support business initiatives, system implementations, reporting enhancements, and data governance framework, including documentation of business processes, controls, and reporting requirements
  • Deliver high-quality work products with strong attention to detail, professional judgment, and a commitment to continuous improvement

Skills

  • BA/BS in Accounting or related field
  • Strong understanding of GAAP accounting principles
  • Experience with financial close, reconciliations, account analysis, and internal controls
  • Demonstrated ability to research and document technical accounting matters
  • Ability to work and succeed in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong process improvement skills and the ability to "think outside the box"
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify root causes and implement sustainable solutions
  • Highly motivated with a strong desire to exceed expectations, and work in a challenging and fast-paced work environment
  • Desire to work with a team where growth and improvement are encouraged and supported
  • Proven ability to interact effectively and communicate complex investment accounting guidelines and policies in an understandable manner to various levels staff, and external vendors
  • Goal-oriented with a track record of task and project completion
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, as the need arises (quarter and year-ends, ad hoc projects)
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at hire and must maintain authorization to work in the United States throughout their employment with our company
  • Minimum Internet Speed:100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload, in alignment with the FCC's definition of "broadband."
  • Internet Type:Fiber, Cable (e.g., Comcast, Spectrum), or DSL
  • CPA or progress toward CPA preferred
  • Relevant work experience in public accounting, insurance or finance preferred
  • Statutory accounting knowledge preferred
  • Knowledge of financial data governance, data quality management, or reporting controls preferred
