Summary
Pet Supplies Plus is a pet supplies retailer focused on providing products and services for pets. The Live Animal Buyer develops and executes assortment, merchandising, promotional, and category strategies for specialty pet categories, analyzes performance, manages vendor relationships, and collaborates with cross-functional teams to drive sales and profitability.
Responsibilities
- Develop assortment strategies that drive sales, profitability, and margin growth
- Build assortments that support neighbor needs, store execution, and industry trends
- Maintain expertise in specialty pet categories, including aquatics, reptiles, avian, and small mammals
- Develop and execute promotional and merchandising strategies with cross-functional partners
- Support category initiatives that drive sales, engagement, and business growth
- Analyze sales, margin, and category performance on a weekly, monthly, and year-to-date basis
- Identify trends and develop action plans to improve business results
- Develop strong relationships with pet partners (vendors)
- Negotiate product, promotional, and category opportunities to support business objectives
- Partner with planning, allocation, marketing, pricing, ecommerce, and operations teams to execute category strategies
- Communicate merchandise priorities, initiatives, and business updates across the organization
Skills
- Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience
- 3-5 years of retail buying and/or merchandise planning experience
- Experience with live animal categories or animal care
- Strong business and financial acumen
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to collaborate and influence cross-functional partners
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams
- Ability to travel periodically for trade shows, store visits, and vendor meetings
