Summary
The City of Wichita is seeking a Technical Support Intern to support various divisions within the IT Department through a rotational internship. The intern will gain hands-on experience by working across multiple functional teams including Service Desk, Application Development, and Data Science.
Responsibilities
- Learn first-tier technical support for end users
- Assist with troubleshooting hardware, software, and network access issues
- Log and track support tickets and resolutions
- Assist in coding, testing, and debugging software
- Participating in agile development cycles and sprint reviews
- Assist the development team with documentation and QA tasks
- Learn application functionality and user issues
- Assist with responding to and resolving support tickets
- Contribute to training guides and knowledge base documentation
- Collaborate with departments to gather business needs
- Assist with requirement analysis and project scoping
- Help evaluate performance metrics of IT solutions
- Assist with collecting, analyzing, and managing geospatial data
- Support mapping and data visualization tasks
- Assist with GIS layers and databases
- Learn to analyze datasets using tools like SQL, Python, or Excel
- Assist in creating dashboards and reports
- Assist in statistical and predictive modeling efforts
- Learn IT operations including system and server monitoring
- Assist with asset management, patching, and system administration
- Learn ITIL-based workflows like change and incident management
- Learn configuration and maintenance of network infrastructure
- Assist with monitoring switches, routers, and firewalls
- Participating in network documentation and performance analysis
- Assist in troubleshooting and maintaining SCADA components
- Learn security and compliance practices for critical infrastructure systems
- Assist with cybersecurity monitoring and incident response tasks
- Participate in maintaining security policies and awareness initiatives

- Ability to safely perform the physical requirements for the specific internship assignment
- An employee will not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace
- Must be currently enrolled at an accredited college or university pursuing an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Data Science, or Engineering
- Must have Junior or Senior standing at the time of the internship
- 6 months of experience using Microsoft Office tools as part of prior work experience, classroom projects, or documented academic assignments
- Must have a valid Kansas Driver's License
- Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50lbs
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship
- Completion of at least one introductory college-level IT course
- 6 months of hands-on experience with IT systems through documented projects, internships, or work
- Completion of at least one course, lab, or a minimum of 6 months of work experience (internship, part-time, or volunteer) in any of the following areas: Help Desk operations or technical support (Eg. ServiceNow), Programming languages (e.g., Python, JavaScript, C#), GIS platforms (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS), Data management and visualization, including tools such as SQL, Power BI, or Tableau, Networking basics (e.g., TCP/IP, Cisco, firewalls) SCADA or industrial control systems
